Constituents call for George Galloway to get out of the house

LONDON - Voters in George Galloway's constituency are calling for the Respect MP to get out of the 'Celebrity Big Brother' house and back into the House of Commons after a website was set up to highlight the taxpayers' money the anti-war campaigner is wasting.

Galloway, who already has one of the worst voting records in the Commons, was the surprise entrant into the house last Thursday where he joined a group of D-list celebs, including an on-the-edge Michael Barrymore and transvestite Pete Burns, in the latest series of 'Celebrity Big Brother'.

Constituents have launched a group called the United Residents of Bethnal Green & Bow along with a : "Contestant George Galloway MP - Why isn't He at Work?"

The site calculates how much Galloway is costing taxpayers and giving constituents the chance to have their say and sign an online petition.

Galloway could be evicted from the house this Friday. He has been put up for eviction alongside Jodie Marsh and Pete Burns. Neither Barrymore nor Paris Hilton impersonator Chantelle received any nominations.

Paul Skinner, of the United Residents group and managing director of web development firm Cergis, said people want to know why he is in the Big Brother house when he should be representing his constituency.

Galloway, who will miss vital Commons votes while in the Channel 4 show, has said he was going into the house for his far-left, anti-war party Respect, Palestine and the audience.

"I'm a constituent of George Galloway's and to see him swagger in there on Thursday when he should be representing his constituents, instead of publicising himself, made me want to do something," Skinner said.

The "Why isn't He at Work" site has, since it was set up on Friday, had more than 16,000 people visit it and hundreds of people email in their comments, with half a dozen people a minute logging on to register their protest at their absent MP's activities.

Galloway, who was kicked out of the Labour party after he incited Arabs to fight British troops and threatened to stand against Labour, won the constituency of Bethnal Green & Bow by just 800 votes in a bitterly fought contest that saw him oust one of Labour's rising stars, Oona King.

"Galloway is an embarrassment to his constituency. Bethnal Green is one of the poorest in the country and it needs its MP. He beat Oona King to win it and she was one of the best constituency MPs around," Skinner added.

Some of the comments Skinner has received include those from schoolchildren whose school the MP was due to visit, while all take a universally negative view of Galloway's move towards celebrity.

A spokesman for Galloway's office said: "George's constituency office continues to run as it has always done -- the office is open five days a week and seven days a week by phone."

As of this morning, Galloway's time in the Big Brother House has cost taxpayers £650, and if he stays in for the entire three weeks this could rise to as much as £4,000.

Skinner says that he plans to see that Galloway receives the petition when he leaves the house and will also make a call for the MP to hand back the cash.

"We want him to give back to his constituency the money he has earned while he has been in the house. Hopefully, he will take representing Bethnal Green & Bow more seriously.

Galloway is currently priced at 16/1 as a potential winner a long way behind leader Michael Barrymore at 2/1, followed by: Preston, 3/1; Maggot 4/1; Any other person (including Chantelle), 5/1; Pete Burns, 12/1; and Dennis Rodman, 16/1.
