The Independent on Sunday says that Kingsmill, who is deputy chairman of the Competition Commission, is in the frame to take the job at ITV after investors, led by Anthony Bolton of Fidelity, moved to ensure that Carlton Communications chairman Michael Green could not take the role.
The paper says that Kingsmill, a lawyer, is also in the running to take the role of chairman of Channel 4 when Vanni Treves retires at the end of this year. She is due to leave the Competition Commission in December, after six years as deputy chairman. The commission has been remarkably free on the conditions applying to the merger of Carlton and Granada, allowing the companies to have a single sales house despite protests that it would end competition in airtime sales.
Other names tipped as possible candidates to become the independent chairman of ITV include former Vodafone chief executive Sir Christopher Gent and the banker John Nelson. However, both are said to be uninterested in taking the role.
A meeting of the ITV nominations committee is due this week to discuss the appointment.
At the same time, non-executive director of Carlton, Etienne de Villiers is expected to resign, according to a report in The Observer.
The newspaper says that De Villiers, who is a close friend of Michael Green, will resign before the meeting to discuss the appointment of chairman.
