Compaq man set for senior role at Hewlett-Packard

Compaq's UK & Ireland marketing director Hugh Barton is poised to land one of the four divisional chief marketing roles at Hewlett-Packard UK & Ireland following the acquisition by its rival earlier this month.

HP's takeover of Compaq had placed Barton's future in doubt, but both he and HP top marketer Borel Setten will assume marketing responsibility for one of the four arms created to form the enlarged company. They are: enterprise systems; personal systems; services; and imaging and printing, the division that houses all its consumer activity.

The remaining two roles are expected to be filled internally.

Barton and Setten are also understood to be setting up a so-called interim marketing council for the new HP as it aims to avoid duplication of marketing effort and brands clashing in their media placement.

The council will also look at how both brands, which have a combined UK adspend of £24m, can exploit each others' strengths.
