Companies link up to educate about TPS penalties

LONDON - Data firms Experian, D&B and Wegner have launched a joint campaign to raise awareness of the newly introduced Corporate Telephone Preference Service to UK businesses, who they believe may be unaware and could be at risk from fines.

Businesses now face fines of 拢5,000 if they call a firm that has chosen to opt out of receiving cold calls. Experian, D&B and Wegner believe that many SMEs remain unaware of the new legislation and could be at greatest risks from fines.

The Corporate TPS empowers UK businesses to shield themselves from unwanted calls. However, the legislation does not extend to countries outside the UK, so there is the threat of organisations outsourcing their cold calling to off-shore call centres to escape the regulations.

The joint initiative claims that the Corporate TPS will have a negative effect, such as small-to-medium sized enterprises that rely heavily on telemarketing to sell their products and services.

Keith Jones, D&B's European marketing director, said : "This legislation changes the way companies are allowed to acquire new customers -- we need to make sure the business community is aware of how to drive growth through customer acquisition while staying within the spirit and the letter of the law."
