COI chief retains adviser's role in Number 10 rejig

The government has pledged to continue its quest for 'joined-up' marketing, despite the resignation of Alastair Campbell, the Prime Minister's director of strategy and communications.

COI Communications chief executive Alan Bishop, who previously reported to Campbell, will now report to the yet-to-be-announced permanent secretary, who will be based in the Cabinet Office. However, Bishop will retain his additional role of chief adviser on marketing communications.

Downing Street is separating political posts from those relating to the civil service, of which COI is a part, under interim recommendations published last week by the Phillis review of government communications - led by Guardian Media Group chief executive Bob Phillis.

The chief adviser role was created last year as part of the government's quinquennial review of the COI, and was designed to ensure more effective integration of government marketing campaigns. Initially held by Carol Fisher, who quit the COI last summer, the role then transferred to Bishop.
