Cumulatively for the period January to May 2002 the total admissions figure is 75.5 million, which is a year-on-year increase of 25 per cent.
Admissions in May were up 20 per cent year on year to a total of 14 million, and the CAA is predicting that total admissions this year will reach 174 million - this will be the highest in 31 years.
Films such as The Panic Room, About A Boy and Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones have driven May's box office success.
George Lucas' second part of the Star Wars prologue took more than £24 million at the box office in its first two weeks and achieved the biggest opening weekend of the year so far.
Universal's film adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel About A Boy, starring Hugh Grant and Rachel Weisz, continued to do well. Despite being released in April it took £10 million in May.
Further major releases that are expected to do well this year include Men In Black 2, The Lord of the Rings and Scooby Doo.
