CIA advertises for Chinese-American spies and analysts

NEW YORK - The Central Intelligence Agency is launching a recruitment campaign targeting Chinese-Americans as it looks for new spies.

The campaign launches at the same time as Chinese New Year, with the government body placing ads in Asian-orientated magazines, particularly in cities that have large Chinese populations.

It follows a similar move to recruit Arab-Americans as the US continues what it calls the "War on Terror". However, the CIA is trying to put a positive spin on recruiting Chinese-Americans, saying it is looking for analysts, as well as people to work for the "clandestine service".

The ads tell people they must be US citizens and must be willing to take a lie-detector test.

The US has been attempting to improve relations with China, after the communist state avoided being named by President George W Bush as one of the countries in the "axis of evil".

The ad tells people: "Just as the Year of the Ram is centred on a strong and clear motivation for peace, harmony and tranquility during challenging times, we are equally intent on our mission to safeguard America and its people."
