Moyles -- who is the self-styled saviour of Radio One -- made the remarks in yesterday morning's breakfast show during a strained interview with 'X Men' actress Berry and her co-star Hugh Jackman.
Asked by Jackman whether the tubby DJ could be a double for James Bond, Moyles adopted a thick American accent and said: "I could definitely do that. Put your hands up in the air! I'm a black American guy. A big fat black guy. I don't wanna be shooting yo' ass."
Berry responded frostily: "Are we having a racist moment here?"
The BBC has vociferously denied claims that his remarks were in any way racist, with Moyles responding, "Not at all. I just can't do American accents."
A BBC spokesperson said: "There was nothing racist in what Chris said and he made that clear on air."
However, Berry's reaction clearly rattled Moyles. After the interview ended he said Berry needed to "get over herself. What the hell was all that about?"
Berry has been consistently outspoken over the treatment of black American actors, describing Hollywood as "full of racists", and claiming that she has been turned down for work on account of her colour.
She condemned the entire academy in the run-up to her Oscar winning performance in 'Monster's Ball' in 2001, when she said no women from ethnic minorities are ever nominated in the best actress category.
Moyles, who is no stranger to controversy, won an entertainment award at last week's Sony Radio Awards. In his acceptance speech he said: "I never have to come to one of these godforsaken Sony nights again. Thank you very much."
Moyles has also mysteriously offered to accompany Welsh singer Charlotte Church through "the forest of sexuality".
