Chorion spends £5m to relaunch Mr Men television series

LONDON - Chorion, the entertainment content company, is spending £5m on reinventing the ‘Mr Men' characters for a new television series to be aired in the US on the Cartoon Network.

'The Mr Men Show' is set to launch in January next year and Chorion says it's the first animated program to bring sketch comedy to young children.

The Cartoon Network will broadcast and co-produce the new series, which includes 52 episodes, each lasting 11-minutes. It will be based on the original Mr Men and Little Miss books created in the 1970s by Roger Hargreaves.

The new series features only 25 of the 73 Mr Men and Little Miss characters, with each redesigned by American animation company Renegade.

Some characters have received only minor adjustments but other redesigns have been more radical. Chorion states: "All [changes] will remain true to the essence of the original Mr. Men and Little Miss creations."

Mr Grumpy, for example, has had his hat and nose tweaked but otherwise looks more or less like the 1970s original.

Nicholas James, chief executive of Chorion, said: "We are extremely happy to partner with the Cartoon Network for the new Mr. Men series. Chorion's ability to add value to such classic brands and infuse them with a contemporary appeal makes it unique within the global market."

Chorion, which own the rights to 'Mr Men', 'Noddy' and the 'Agatha Christie' stories, is handling all media sales, licensing and merchandising for the show.

Bob Higgins, senior vice-president of programming and original animation at the Cartoon Network, said: "We are very excited to be working with Chorion to bring these characters to a new generation of viewers. We have jointly developed a unique and fresh approach by adopting the sketch comedy show formula for kids.

"We feel this is a funny and engaging show and that it sits firmly with Cartoon Network's comedy roots and will appeal to our younger audience."

Over 100m copies of the original Mr Men and Little Miss books have been sold worldwide.

Fellow digital children's channel Nickelodeon UK has also announced that it will broadcast a CGI version of children's classic 'The Magic Roundabout'. The show will air on pre-school channel Nick Jr. A date is yet to be set for broadcast.
