The annual event will take place on 11-18 February 2012.
The orchestras' two Royal Festival Hall concerts, centred around complete performances of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Dvorák’s New World Symphony, will feature art work and music by young people inspired by the original symphonic masterpieces.
Joining the two orchestras on stage will be the David Idowu Choir, founded in memory of David Olawale Idowu, a teenager who lost his life to knife crime in 2008. The choir brings together singers from secondary schools across Southwark.
During the event, conductor Charles Hazlewood will work with more than 300 young people from Southwark to explore the themes of ‘pictures in sound’ and ‘migration’.He will lead workshops and rehearsals with young Southwark instrumentalists and vocalists across the week.
Southbank Centre’s creative director of learning and participation, Shân Maclennan, said: "These projects bring together two of Southbank Centre’s passions: putting young people at the heart of our work and introducing new audiences to great music. Charles Hazlewood is the perfect artist to enable our world class resident orchestra and schools in Southwark to work together to make two interesting experiences for families."
