Channel Five Broadcasting cuts programming budget by 25% as advertising falls

LONDON - Five has cut its programming budget by 25% this year as it battles declining advertising revenues.

Channel Five Broadcasting cuts programming budget by 25% as advertising falls

The commercial broadcaster has a programme budget of £165m this calendar year, down from £220m last year.

The commercial broadcasters have all been under pressure, but Five has significanlty more limited resources compared with ITV and Channel 4.

Chief executive Dawn Airey said the broadcaster was forced to be ‘incredibly creative' and taken budget out of its daytime and late night schedules to put into prime time.

However, she said its ratings performance had not suffered, with Five the only terrestrial broadcaster whose family of channels' share was up year on year, by 0.2%.

The Nintendo ad-funded series Britain's Best Brain will launch on the channel soon, as will its new nightly 7pm show, to be made by Sky News.
