Channel 5 rebrands daily news show

LONDON - Channel 5's evening news bulletin, the programme that saw other TV channels copying its laidback style, is to be rebranded as 'Five News', bringing it in line with the channel's autumn relaunch.

The ITN-produced news programme, currently known as '5 News', will have a new ident and a redesigned set.

The new-look news show is part of Channel 5's autumn relaunch. The broadcaster recently unveiled the channel's new branding as Five, part of its first overhaul since it launched in 1997.

Channel 5 recommissioned design and brand consultants Ortmans Young to modify the Channel 5 news brand.

The rest of the channel's relaunch was handled by design agency Spin, creative strategists WalkerBannisterBuss and advertising agency TBWA\London.

The news show was updated in January as part of a makeover of the set when Kirsty Young, who had defected to ITV, returned to front the channel's 5.30pm and 7.30pm news bulletins.

Young became famous as the face of Channel 5 when she first appeared on TV screens standing up while reading the news. This style has since been emulated by Channel 4 and BBC newsreaders.

The January redesign of the set incorporated Young's style of newsreading by incorporating a high-perch bench based in a new blue studio in an attempt to give '5 News' an accessible feel with a more mature look.

The new branding goes live on Monday September 16.
