Channel 4 reasserts its remit

LONDON - Channel 4 has introduced a new programme policy to build on its heritage of provocative output in its 25th year of broadcasting.

Channel 4 reasserts its remit

Kevin Lygo, the broadcaster's director of television and content, has unveiled four key themes for the channel's schedules in 2007.

He divided programmes into challenging political, social and ethical subject matter, strong authorship, support for new talent, and new formats and cross-genre initiatives.

The announcement coincided with a stinging attack in The Guardian, which claimed the channel had drifted too far from its public service roots.

The broadcaster is spending £1m on relaunching websites for Channel 4 News and flagship factual show Dispatches plans two new sites, 4Laughs and FourDocs.

Channel 4 is spending more than £600 million on television and online this year, £504 million of which will go on the core Channel 4 service.

Dispatches increases its run to 40 shows this year, alongside 20 episodes of international current affairs show Unreported World 20 episodes of domestic strand The Insider.
