Channel 4 denies link to NGW

LONDON - Channel 4 has disassociated itself from National Grid Wireless (NGW) as the two companies go head to head with bids for the second national digital multiplex.

Channel 4 denies link to NGW
In plans announced this afternoon (Wednesday), NGW confirmed it had allocated two station slots to 4Radio, should it win the licence over its rival.

Channel 4 has in turn revealed details of three planned stations, E4 Radio, Channel 4 Radio and Pure4, that would go on its own network if successful.

But in a statement of clarification released less than an hour after the bids were submitted to Ofcom, Channel 4 said: "The three proposed Channel 4 branded radio stations unveiled today are exclusive to the 4 Digital Group bid.

"There have been no conversations between Channel 4 and NGW and there is no guarantee that the stations will launch if 4 Digital Group's application for the second national multiplex is unsuccessful."

A spokesman added: "We do not recognise the descriptions of the two Channel 4 radio stations in NGW's bid  - they bear little relation to any of our three proposed services and are entirely NGW's creation, prepared without consulting Channel 4."
