LONDON - Channel 4 is axing two of its staple news programmes, its lunchtime news bulletin and More4 News, in a cost-cutting move that will put more than 30 jobs at risk.

The lunchtime bulletin, News at Noon, which has been running since 2003, will end programming at the end of year. Likewise, More4 News, which has been running since 2004, will end at the same time.

The staff at ITN, which produced Channel 4's news offering, were told of the move, which comes as C4 looks to cut costs, at lunchtime today.

It is understood the number of redundancies is likely to be less than 20, significantly less than 33,  the number affected by the axing of the shows, as Channel 4 and ITN will look to redeploy staff on other news programmes.

Consultation with the affected staff begins with immediate effect.

The decision will not impact on Krishnan Guru-Murthy, the news anchor on News at Noon.

Channel 4 said it had made the decision to protect the longevity of its flagship Channel 4 News programme, presented by Jon Snow.

A spokesman for ITN said: "We are very disappointed that the financial challenges facing the channel have left them with no option but to reduce budgets."
