Channel 4 to add music in new strategy

Channel 4 is planning a music site as part of its overhaul of digital services.

The site, expected to launch in late spring, will be part of a new online music channel. It aims to highlight C4's music coverage, mainly broadcast under the T4 entertainment brand.

Details of the project are still being finalised, but a spokes-person confirmed that downloads are likely to feature. "It will be a large-scale music vertical, which will be a key part of what Channel 4 new media will do, but it is still a work in progress," she said.

Revolution can also reveal that there are plans to follow the launch with an online gaming channel. Both sites form part of C4's plans to shake up its web strategy with a raft of new content sites, as well as new ad formats and online marketing tactics.

The site recently launched a widescreen, interactive ad that provides similar opportunities as a TV bumper ad. The format was initially hosted on the homepage and is being rolled out across the brand's other vertical content channels, including entertainment.

The new ad format aims to exploit the increasing penetration of broadband and develop an online strategy more closely linked to TV.

In addition, the channel expects to be able to offer advertisers other new opportunities and similar creative firsts during the year. These include plans to use email newsletters more extensively, along with search-engine optimisation and affiliate marketing.
