Chanel marketer to head strategy for Estee Lauder

Global cosmetics giant Estee Lauder has poached a senior marketer from rival Chanel to oversee its UK marketing strategy.

Meryl Armitage (nee Bagguley), UK marketing director at Chanel for the past three years, rejoined Estee Lauder as marketing director earlier this month.

She had previously worked on its sister brand Clinique as marketing manager. Armitage will oversee all UK brand communications for the Estee Lauder brand, including implementation of creative work developed in the US.

Elizabeth Hurley continues to star in Estee Lauder's global advertising despite the introduction of model Carolyn Murphy into its ads last September.

A spokeswoman said speculation that Hurley would be dropped from the brand's ads was rubbish.

Armitage reports into the UK general manager for Estee Lauder, Stevan Lind. She was unavailable for comment as Marketing went to press.

Armitage has yet to be replaced at Chanel. She joined the company in 1998.
