According to MasterCard, an official sponsor of the Champions League, Manchester United and Chelsea FC will profit from increased squad value, prize money, sponsorship deals, television rights and growth in season-ticket sales. The loser stands to earn £30m from the game.
The research, which was conducted by professor Simon Chadwick, director of Coventry University's Centre of the International Business of Sport, suggests that the two clubs earned more than £30m on the road to the final. Last year, the UEFA Champions League Final in Athens was worth up to £67m, according to the financial services brand.
The study also concluded that the winning team's home city will enjoy a windfall of about £10m through positive economic impacts such as enhanced city image and reputation, resulting in increased tourism among other benefits.
