Carlton and Granada in talks to settle Football League rights deal

LONDON - Carlton and Granada are understood to be close to reaching a settlement with the Football League over the £315m three-year TV rights deal that brought down ITV Digital.

ITV Digital was placed into administration on March 27 after the Football League refused to renegotiate the terms of the rights deal, which left the digital terrestrial broadcaster owing £178m when league matches failed to attract sufficient viewers to its pay-TV sports channel ITV Sport.

The league has been threatening to sue Carlton and Granada, owners of ITV Digital, for £500m to cover the £178m outstanding plus loss of earnings if matches are not televised.

Carlton chief executive Gerry Murphy and Granada chairman Charles Allen were set to meet with Football League chairman Keith Harris on Friday to discuss a deal between the two parties.

It is thought that the Football League is hoping for a settlement of £100m to help it stop many small league division clubs going bankrupt.
