Sources close to the High Court case say the judge will rule that the league can not hold the two ITV firms responsible for the unpaid cash following the collapse of the digital service in April. The case began on Monday.
Earlier this week, the High Court heard that the Football League failed to ask for a guarantee from Carlton and Granada when it signed its three-year £315m deal with ITV Digital.
The admission was made by Brian Philpotts, former commercial director of the Football League responsible for negotiating the deal, who admitted in court that he did not ask for a guarantee from Carlton and Granada that they would pick up the bill if ITV Digital got into financial difficulty.
Lawyers for the ITV companies have argued that this makes the league's case groundless.
Sources close to the case told Reuters: "There was no document to say Carlton and Granada authorised a bid on behalf of ITV Digital for the football rights."
