Carlsberg first to sponsor Euro 2004

LONDON - Carlsberg has extended its links with football by signing up to become the first sponsor of the Euro 2004 football championship in Portugal.

The deal, for an undisclosed sum, gives Carlsberg official beer status for the 2004 and 2008 competitions. It has also negotiated a commercial package including signage around the pitches of all 31 matches.

Nils Anderson, CEO of Carlsberg Breweries, said: "Football is an integral part of the Carlsberg brand. We are committed to the world's favourite game and hope that this investment reiterates our continued support for football at all levels from the grass roots to the ultimate competition in Europe."

Carlsberg has been involved with the Euro tournaments since 1988, when it sponsored the German competition. It went on to sponsor the 1992 finals in Sweden, the Euro tournament in 1996 in the UK and Euro 2000 in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Lennart Johanson, president of Uefa, said: "Carlsberg has a long heritage as part of the game and their partnership with Uefa, going back to 1988, has been to the benefit of the long-term future of European football."

Carlsberg's support of the game includes sponsorship of the Premier League's Liverpool Football Club and the Scottish Premiership's Hibernian club in Edinburgh.

The brand has also just begun a 拢28m relaunch campaign to increase its market share in the UK. The company recently signed up model Helena Christensen to promote the drink.
