UK bottling and distribution is handled by Coca-Cola Enterprises. Together, Coca-Cola GB and Coca-Cola Enterprises employ 5000 staff.
The global brand was created in 1886 in Atlanta by pharmacist John Pemberton.
His book-keeper, Frank Robinson, named the product after two ingredients: coca leaves (later purified) and kola nuts.
In July 2003, Coca-Cola GB launched an on-pack promotion for Coke and Vanilla Coke, offering consumers the chance to play at a famous football stadium in the UK or mainland Europe.
The company launched a Diet Coke TV campaign in September to encourage consumers to vote for their favourite films. The public had the chance to win tickets to special screenings of the winning movies at UGC cinemas.
Later that month, Coca-Cola GB appointed Mother to its ad account.
October saw Coca-Cola launch a permanent LED display in London's Piccadilly Circus. The sign features a message that alters according to the weather.
In the same month, Diet Coke with Lemon signed up to sponsor the next two series of Will & Grace on Channel Four. This was quickly followed by Fanta announcing an addition to its range. The apple, kiwi and lime drink - Fanta Apple Splash - goes on sale this spring.
A month later, Five Alive announced the launch of a selection of concentrated variants: Citrus Burst, Tropical Hit and Berry Blast.
Coca-Cola signed up England footballer Wayne Rooney in December to front a TV ad to encourage children to take part in Coca-Cola's football tournament for under-13s.
The company struck a deal with music firm OD2 in the same month to supply songs for its music download service.
In January, Coca-Cola hired brand consultancy Ergo to work on its Powerade sports drink. The work will focus on this year's Olympics and Euro 2004.
Powerade is the official sports drink for both events.
Last month, the group came under fire when it was revealed that its Dasani brand, launched in January, is specially treated tap water. Dasani is the second-biggest water brand in the US.
