CAREERS: Company CV - BBC Worldwide

BBC Worldwide is the commercial subsidiary of the BBC. Its role is to maximise the value of the BBC's programme and publishing assets for the benefit of the licence-payer and reinvest in public service programming.

The business covers the following areas: television channels, international programming distribution, books, magazines, videos, spoken word, music, DVDs, licensed products, CD-ROMs, English language teaching, education and training, interactive telephony, library footage sales, co-production, magazine subscription fulfilment, exhibitions, live events, film and media monitoring.

BBC Worldwide was established in May 1994 to bring together all the BBC's international and commercial activities. It is Europe's biggest exporter of television programming and the world's biggest TV channel operator outside the US.

The firm's headquarters are in White City, London, and it has overseas offices in France, Hong Kong, Australia, the US, Singapore, India, Japan, Dubai, Germany and Canada.

BBC global television channels include: BBC World, BBC Prime, BBC America, and its joint venture channels, including Animal Planet and People & Arts with Discovery Communications, and UKTV with Foxtel and FremantleMedia in Australia. The network of channels reaches more than 460 million homes around the world.

In October 2002, UKTV launched a sixth channel. UK History joined Gold, Drama, Style, Horizons and Food in its portfolio. It has also announced a joint venture with Flextech to add a youth channel, Style Extra, later this year.

In January 2003, BBC Worldwide release The Office was named the nation's best-selling television title. The BBC Two comedy also became the country's fastest-selling non-film DVD.

A month later, BBC Worldwide signed an export deal with Arabic news channel al-Jazeera. The Qatar state-owned station, known for broadcasting statements from Osama bin Laden, purchased 1000 hours of current affairs, wildlife, history and science programmes.

In March, BBC Worldwide announced plans to transform the aquatic documentary series Blue Planet into a feature film for cinema release. The production is in partnership with Greenlight Media and forms part of a wider deal on a number of proposed cinematic releases for the BBC's natural history output.
