Capital Radio first announced Vaughan's appointment to take over from Tarrant in September.
This morning Capital emailed out a voice mail message from Vaughan making known his April 19 start date.
"Hi, it's Johnny here. Just thought I'd give you a call just to let you know that I'm starting on the new breakfast show on 95.8 FM on April 19. That's Johnny by the way, not Jono. There's a massive difference. Well about four stone. That's big enough isn't it."
Capital Radio's flagship London station recaptured its lead in London over rival Heart in the latest round of Rajars for October to December 2003.
The 95.8 Capital FM breakfast show added 150,000 listeners to 1.2m and increased its share from 7.6% to 8.9%, making it the number one commercial radio choice for Londoners.
Vaughan signed a three-year deal to present the big-hitting weekday breakfast show after the long-rumoured-to-depart Tarrant, who also hosts 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' on ITV1, was finally confirmed to be retiring.
Vaughan was chosen after what was thought to be a lengthy search, which saw drivetime host and 'Pop Idol' judge Neil "Dr" Fox lose out.
"To be asked to fill CT's big headphones, and trust me they are big headphones, is an honour and I am thrilled to take on this challenge," Vaughan said at the time.
Vaughan made his name as the host of Channel 4's 'Big Breakfast', which he presented alongside Denise van Outen. He went on to sign a £3m contract with the BBC that saw him star in a sitcom and host the chat show 'Johnny Vaughan Tonight'. Neither was a ratings nor critical success.
