Beltrao said the brand was in talks with a number of digital agencies and was midway through the selection process.
While he would not comment on the agencies involved, Beltrao said the brand would look at rolling out the site next year.
"There are still a few hurdles to jump but we are looking at next year to get things moving. Because there are so many strands to what we are doing and multiple projects, it's important that we get the thinking and the approach right, that the front and back-end are aligned, and we have ensured that we can support it all. It's not just about getting a new site up to gather dust."
Beltrao said the aim of the new site is to present Canon's large product portfolio, which includes consumer and business products, in a relevant and contextual way to its users. Canon-europe.com receives 1.65 million page views per day.
Beltrao was previously interactive consultant on brands such as HP with Banner Corporation.
