TBWA has distanced itself from the two anti-Tory ads, one of which depicted Michael Howard, the Conservative leader, and Oliver Letwin, the shadow chancellor (both of whom are Jewish), as flying pigs. Another showed Howard in a pose that drew comparisons with Fagin and Shylock.
Initially the work, which was not officially released, was attributed to TBWA. However, according to a spokesman for agency chairman and creative chief Trevor Beattie, the Fagin/Shylock ideas are the work of Campbell.
Following the row, Labour had said that there was to be stronger political control and supervision of what the agency does in future despite the fact that the posters had been put on the Labour Party website for members to assess.
Campbell returned to the fray last week, taking on the job of head of strategic election communications at Downing Street as the party unveiled its election campaign slogan, "Britain forward, not back".
The return of Campbell has followed reports that he is planning a "dirty tricks" campaign against Tory leader Howard, setting the scene for a dirty election battle.
Labour has been revealed to be using the new Freedom of Information Act to dig for dirt on Howard, including how he might have used his position as a minister to help friends when he served in the last Tory government.
