In the newly expanded role Spanier will lead ±±¾©Èü³µpk10’s coverage of the media industry across all platforms – digital, live and in print. He will also edit its sister website MediaWeek.co.uk.
Spanier was at the London Evening Standard for more than ten years, and was the media editor from 2012. Most recently, he has been freelancing for the business section of The Times while continuing to write for the Standard.
He replaces Arif Durrani, who left ±±¾©Èü³µpk10 in August to join Bloomberg Media as the commercial editor for EMEA.
Claire Beale, ±±¾©Èü³µpk10's global editor-in-chief, said: "Gideon has a formidable track record as a national media journalist and a deep understanding of the dynamic media sector that is so important to both ±±¾©Èü³µpk10 and Media Week.
"I'm really looking forward to working with him to develop our coverage of media both in the UK and overseas, ensuring that we remain the first place media executives come to find out what the latest machinations in the media world really mean."
Spanier starts at ±±¾©Èü³µpk10 today. His first major task will be to introduce the sold-out Media Week Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Thursday evening.
He said: "The media and advertising business is increasingly global, so I am excited to join a company that wants to make sense of this fast-changing, digital world by investing in original journalism, live events and international expansion.
"±±¾©Èü³µpk10 has a great history and I’m looking forward to being part of shaping its future."
