C5 set to replace peak-time news with Home and Away

LONDON - Channel 5 could get the go-ahead from industry regulator the Independent Television Commission to move its main evening news bulletin out of its peak-time slot to make way for its new soap Home and Away.

Channel 5’s public service obligations currently states that it must broadcast its evening news programme between 6pm and 10.30pm. The ITC is expected to rule in Channel 5’s favour because the government’s recently published white paper stated that there would be a review of Channel 5’s public service commitments.

If the news is moved it will appear at an earlier 5.30pm slot to allow Home and Away to be broadcast at 6pm. Channel 5 poached the Australian soap from ITV last year and it is expected to begin transmission from July.
