C4 promotes Lygo to director of television and content

LONDON - Channel 4 has promoted Kevin Lygo from director of television to the position of director of television and content as part of a restructure of its senior commissioning team.

The restructure was instigated by the network's chief executive Andy Duncan, with Julian Bellamy returning to take the position of programme head at Channel 4 from his current position of controller of BBC Three.

Duncan said: "Channel 4 is now commissioning and distributing content across a broad array of digital platforms and our commissioning structure is evolving to ensure all our networks and services support our core editorial values of innovation, diversity and distinctiveness."

Lygo will have line-management responsibility for the group's portfolio of TV channels -- Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4 -- and for cross-platform commissioning areas such as acquisitions, education and film. He will also have strategic management responsibility for the channels' schedules, working in conjunction with channel controllers.

He will also be tasked with the development of the schedules of any new 4-branded digital TV channels and take a more active role in overseeing the development and commissioning of content for Channel 4's services on new digital platforms, including online and mobile.

Working alongside Nathalie Schwarz, director of radio, Lygo will contribute to the development of Channel 4's content strategy for radio should its bid for the second national DAB multiplex be successful.

Bellamy will have commissioning responsibility for programming on the core Channel 4 service and line-management responsibility for genre-commissioning teams including: comedy and entertainment; daytime; documentaries; drama; features; factual entertainment; history, science and religion; news and current affairs; and T4.

Duncan said: "Julian is in the vanguard of the next generation of channel controllers coming through in television and Kevin and I are convinced he's the right person to lead the next stage of Channel 4's development."

Lygo said: "Julian made his name at Channel 4 and, while it's always flattering to see your executives hired by other broadcasters, it's much more satisfactory to return them to the fold. Julian and I have previously enjoyed a close working relationship and I know we can combine again to strengthen and renew Channel 4's schedule. I'm excited by his return and by the prospect of extending my role across more aspects of Channel 4's creative process."

Before joining Channel 4, Lygo was previously director of programmes at rival terrestrial channel Five.
