The site, which was started in 2002 by three French entrepreneurs as an internal tool, aims to allow business professionals to create profiles and build networks online and meet and exchange information and views with like-minded people worldwide on issues from the stock market to digital marketing.
The site went public in France in 2004, and by the end of 2005 there were 100,000 members and 10 staff. It is similar to other such networking sites as LinkedIn, Xing and Ecademy.
Viadeo claims 3,000 new users join each day and the site is available in English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Italian.
With Viadeo, users can not only create personal profiles online, but also participate in the business community aspect of the network. Viadeo's "hubs" allow business people to network with like-minded people all over the world through discussion boards, forums, blogs and RSS feeds.
