Fumes meant the building had to be shut to shoppers and a statement was placed on the venue's website which read: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, Bullring is closed today."
According to reports up to 14 people were taken to hospital.
The Bullring website said department store Selfridges had been due to host an event today (21 May), showcasing swimwear and underwear for Spring/Summer 09.
For three weeks from Monday 27 July, Bullring will be turned into three city break destinations: Paris, New York and Madrid. A "VIP experience" will also be hosted by Heart FM.
