BTA picks WCRS to boost English tourism in the UK

The British Tourist Authority (BTA) has handed WCRS the task of promoting England to British consumers amid expectations that a war in Iraq will devastate the domestic tourism industry.

As the government made final preparations to participate in a US-led offensive against Saddam Hussein, tourism organisations and travel companies were bracing themselves for a sharp fall in consumer demand.

Efforts to promote tourism in cities such as London risk being undermined by a Metropolitan Police poster campaign launched this week placing the public on alert for terrorist attacks.

The BTA, which merges with the English Tourism Council on April 1, will announce details of the WCRS campaign next week.

A range of public and private sector organisations will make financial contributions to the initiative.

The campaign will encourage Brits to enjoy England's culture and heritage and promote the dynamism of its major cities.
