His brief will include persuading businesses to take up BT's broadband internet offering, on which the telecoms giant is pinning its hopes for growth.
Evans takes the role of director of marketing for small and medium enterprises next month, replacing John Furmston, who has moved to head RedCare, BT's security and remote monitoring business.
He will market the BT Business brand and the bt.com internet service, particularly its no-frills broadband product.
It is understood that BT does not intend to replace him in his current job, which he has held for two years. One of his main tasks has been to uphold the company's share of the residential telephony market. His responsibilities will be overseen by director of marketing services Amanda Mackenzie.
Evans has been a senior figure in BT for more than ten years in a career that has included stints as brand director for BT Cellnet and director of marketing services.
