BT picks director for consumer PC marketing post

BT has appointed former BT Cellnet marketer Andrew Collinson as marketing director of BT Home Computing, its new venture to sell home PCs direct to consumers.

Collinson moves from BT Retail Ventures, where he has been venture developer since November 2001. He was previously head of marketing operations and planning at O2, then BT Cellnet. He will oversee a £1m marketing budget for the venture which will include radio, print and direct marketing.

St Luke's has been earmarked to handle advertising.

BT Home computing will use BT's customer service operation in collaboration with computer manufacturers Hewlett-Packard and Toshiba. Each PC will come broadband-ready as standard, part of BT's strategy to encourage broadband take-up at home.

The product will initially be sold direct, first through telesales and later through a dedicated web site. Collinson said there were no firm plans for selling through the high street as BT has no presence at the moment after selling its stores to O2 last year. However, he added it was something the company was looking at.
