BT considers cable TV

LONDON - BT is considering expanding into the cable television market, which is an "untapped goldmine" according to chairman Sir Christopher Bland.

Until recently, regulations prevented BT from entering the market but the restriction ended in January. If BT goes ahead with the plans, it will compete directly with cable operators NTL and Telewest.

If Sir Christopher's vision is realised, cable television will be supplied to residential customers over its ADSL network, which is being developed to provide high-speed internet and telephone services. The company would need to sign content partners, which would likely include BSkyB and ONdigital.

In an effort to revitalise the company and reduce its £28bn debt, Sir Christopher is thought to be considering a number of other options, such as selling gas and electricity to customers.

BT has already sold off assets, such as stakes in its international mobile phone businesses, and it completed the £2.1bn sale of its Yell! directories business to Apax Partners and Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst over the weekend.
