BSkyB to license TV-web software

BSkyB is to sell the technology behind its SkyNet internet-on-TV platform to third parties.

The WTVML technology enables retailers to adapt their websites for use on digital satellite TV.

Sources suggest BSkyB is negotiating a deal with its former technical alliances director, Ian Valentine, who plans to launch a company to sell the SkyNet concept.

If successful, the project could see rival TV platforms, such as NTL:Telewest and BT Vision, launch own-brand versions of the service.

SkyNet launched last April, with department store John Lewis, sister food retailer brand Waitrose and fashion brand Faith among the first to sign up to the service.
