Customers will automatically be entered into a draw and winners will receive a 'green' prize. These include an energy-efficient home and a Honda hybrid car as well as smaller prizes such as wind-up torches and solar-powered mobile-phone chargers.
The company would not reveal how much money it is spending on the prize-draw initiative, which starts in December and will run for a year.
Last month, British Gas launched a campaign called 'Save a Billion' with advertising that gives consumers advice on how to save energy (Marketing, 20 September).
In common with other utility firms, British Gas has been hit by the rise in the cost of wholesale gas, lost 350,000 customers in the first half of the year.
