The 15-million peak was reached at 9.51pm and the show had an average audience of 12.3 million between 7.30pm and 10pm, a 54.6% share of the available audience.

According to ITV, Saturday's audience makes ‘Britain's Got Talent' the most watched entertainment show of 2010.

This year did not match the runaway success of Susan Boyle, which helped last year's final to an average audience of 15.3 million for the main show and 17.3 million for the results show, which peaked at 19.2 million.

But the ‘Britain's Got Talent' audience still dwarfed anything on offer on the other terrestrial channels at the same time. ‘Victoria Wood's Short Term Memories' on BBC One between 9.15pm and 10pm only managed an average of 2.1 million viewers, a 9% share of the available audience.

Channel 4's screening of ‘Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' was watched by an average of 1.4 million viewers between 7pm and 10.40pm on Saturday, a 5.6% share of the available audience.

The latest instalment of ‘Doctor Who' was watched by an average of five million viewers on BBC One or BBC HD between 6.45pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, a 29.4% share of the available audience.

On Sunday night, 'Soccer Aid 2010', a charity football match in aid of Unicef, managed an average audience of 5.6 million on ITV1 or ITV1 HD between 6pm and 10pm, a 25.4% share of the TV watching audience.

'Soccer Aid', in which Robbie Williams and Gordon Ramsay played alongside footballers such as Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham, had a peak audience of 8.6 million viewers (a 34% share) at 9.55pm.

The ‘British Academy Television Awards' (Baftas) on BBC One had an average of 4.1 million viewers between 8pm and 10pm last night, a 17.1% share of the available audience.
