Hopes are high that the project, backed by VisitEngland, will become a tourist attraction in 2014, akin to the numerous Olympic mascots which were dotted throughout London in 2012.

Different artists will be called on to design each bench, which are shaped like giant open books, with businesses choosing from titles linked to London – from JM Barrie’s Peter Pan to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein - or selecting their own book.

KPMG and Walker Books have already sponsored the first two benches, featuring 1984 and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt respectively.
