Branding News: Smash Martians aid pasta range

The Smash Martians, the iconic characters from the 70s ads for Smash instant mashed potato, are to be used as a branding device on a canned pasta range.

Premier Foods has struck a deal to licence the Martians to sister company HP Foods, which plans to target the pasta at teenagers.

The September launch follows the Martians' recent move into clothing, which has seen branded T-shirts sold in record stores including HMV and Virgin. The range features slogans such as 'Get smashed' and 'Alien icon' and is part of a licensing drive managed by KDBC.

Smash Martians pasta will carry an on-pack voucher offering money off the instant-potato range, which is set to be expanded with the launch of another flavour this year.
