Brand in the news - Habitat

Habitat is facing an interesting paradox, and one I faced during my time at Marks & Spencer and Kingfisher: how to balance a value message against brand uniqueness in the quest for volume.

The homewares market is a tough battleground, and there have been many casualties. With the current squeeze on discretional spending, reinforcement of value-for-money is critical.

Conran has found a magic formula with Habitat: a contemporary style, innovation and practicality. The key for Habitat is not to lose sight of the brand heritage with a push for volume.

It is right to reinforce the balance between value and the uniqueness of the Conran style, but not at the expense of drifting into no man's land, fighting the wrong battle on the wrong turf.
