BR Video: Public support stronger responsible drinking message

The drinks industry needs to do more to get the responsible drinking message across, according to some of the people interviewed in our latest BR Video.

Amanda, a 42-year-old nurse, said the alcohol consumption problems in this country were "no worse than anywhere else".

Veejay, a consultant, said there is most definitely a problem in this country. "The UK is definitely a big problem," he said when comparing to other countries which he claimed were more sensible about drinking.

"The connection between having a good time and alcohol is too connected," said Mark, 45.  "Nearly all socialising is done in pubs."

Younger people disagreed. Holly, a 19-year-old sales assistant, said that a few individuals put negative attention onto something that isn't really a problem. But she added: "I think some people can be irresponsible with the way they consume alcohol," she said.

"You've got typical drunks rolling ouf of clubs, laying on benches. It portrays an image that every person that goes to a club is going to come out looking exactly like that."

Current attempts to promote responsible drinking are not enough for most interviewees.

"I think I've seen one advert about alcohol, so no," said Josh, a 22-year-old salesman.

"They're doing their bit or trying to anyway," said Paul, an administrator who cited the adverts with the "Please Drink Responsibly" slogan.

But for Mark "just putting slogans on the bottom of adverts I don't think is taking a big enough step". Drawing parallels with the crackdown on cigarette marketing, he said: "I think there needs to be a regulatory body that forces them to take further steps."

Veejay also wants a "more in your face" warning on alcohol packaging.

"Give people a little bit more of a reminder of what damage it can do both to themselves and to the community," he said.
