Hunter's role is a new one and, when she joins at the beginning of next year, she will take responsibility for BP's corporate brand direction. This includes strategic publications such as the annual report; sponsorship; and internal communication, particularly the website.
She reports to Mark Ware, group vice-president of communications, and will oversee a team of more than 20 people.
Hunter is a long-time Tony Blair aide, beginning work for him after he became leader of the Labour Party seven years ago. Her departure is thought to be a serious blow to the prime minister's communications team. She holds the title of director of government relations at present, and is set to join BP on February 1 2001.
A spokesman for BP said it was too early to tell if Hunter would be overseeing a review of the oil giant's advertising agency arrangements. The company currently uses Ogilvy & Mather on a global basis.
