Boots launches private medical insurance on high street

LONDON - Boots has teamed up with health insurance firm PruHealth to launch a medical insurance product, which awards lower premiums to those who live a healthier lifestyle.

The health and beauty chain aims to provide a competitively priced health insurance product to gain business from people who cannot normally afford to take out cover.

The company is offering half-price health insurance premiums for the first year to customers who join its Boots Health Club before October. The club offers health information and price deductions on health-related products.

After the first year, customers can continue to gain low premiums by taking part in the 'Vitality' programme - a concept that was originally introduced into the UK by PruHealth. Rewards will also be given to people who make no or low claims.

The programme allows customers to collect Boots Vitality points by completing online health reviews, having an eye test or downloading online meal plans. These points then count towards a vitality status, which determines how large a no claims bonus the customer receives.

Kevin Johnson, head of Boots Insurance services, said: "Boots recognises the vital role it can play in improving the nation's health by rewarding our customers. It is a great opportunity for us to use our position on the high street to offer the public greater access to private healthcare through our partnership with PruHealth."

Shaun Matisonn, PruHealth chief executive, said: "This partnership is key to both companies' commitment to improving the health of the UK population. By teaming up with a trusted company like Boots, we aim to make private health insurance more accessible and affordable via the high street, and really begin to change people's attitude to health and wellbeing."

Boots Health Insurance will be available from April 25, offering three levels of cover. Standard cover will include access to every registered private hospital, access to every NHS private patient unit in the UK, full cancer cover and access to over 13,000 consultants and specialists.
