The German government is paying owners of cars that are over nine years old Euros 2,500 towards the cost of buying a new one in a bit to reduce overall emissions. It is hoped that 600,000 old cars will be scrapped in Germany and replaced with more efficient ones and the initiative has helped the troubled motor industry cope with recession.

Speaking at the Geneva Motor Show, BMW's Ian Robertson said that such an initiative in the UK would benefit indigenous producers of small cars, such as MINI, Honda and Nissan.
