BMW said it will use the sponsorship of the Games to focus attention on its most fuel efficient cars. The marque will also provide BMW bicycles for use by athletes and London 2012 staff in the Athletes Village.
'Sustainability is a central pillar of our business and guides all aspects of our operations,' said Ian Robertson, BMW group sales and marketing director.
'This has lead to our being named by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index as the most sustainable automotive company, for the fifth year in a row. Therefore we have a natural affinity with London 2012 and its commitment to low carbon and healthy living,' he added.
There are now just under 1,000 days until the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games.
The news of BMW taking tier-one sponsorship comes days after Locog's announcement that former-Eurostar marketing chief Greg Nugent would be taking on the brand and marketing director role on a full-time basis. Nugent had previously worked for Locog as a marketing consultant.
