BMW, the official automotive partner to the Olympics, created the diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles to meet Locog’s ambitious emissions targets.
The cars, motorbikes and bicycles will carry event organisers, media, judges, Games officials and staff, ranging from medical officers to crew.
They will be used in operations like pulling boats out of the water for Olympic sailing competitions at Weymouth, acting as a mobile camera platform for the marathon, towing horse ambulances across Greenwich Park for equestrian events or transporting medal winners around the Olympic Park.
Locog has an emissions target of an under 120 grams of CO2 per kilometre, significantly lower than UK average for new cars which is 138 grams per kilometre. The BMW fleet meets the target – averaging at 116 grams per kilometre.
Richard George, transport director for Locog said: "From motorcycles to electric vehicles and 4x4s, the requirements of the 2012 fleet are hugely diverse. BMW and MINI have provided a variety of different cars, ideal both for city driving and long distance, to travel to Olympic and Paralympic venues around the country. It was vital that our partner in this field could deliver a one-stop shop solution and meet our sustainability targets."
