Larry Barker, the creative director of BMP DDB, will be declared
D&AD president elect at the organisation’s annual general meeting on 28
January.
Barker, who stood unopposed for the position, will take over the
presidency in January 2000 when the tenure of Richard Seymour, the
current president, comes to an end.
’I am honoured and I feel D&AD is something I can contribute to,’ Barker
said. His agenda for 2000 includes a continued emphasis on ’convincing
the world that creativity is not an indulgence’.
Barker also vowed to look into the under-representation of women in
creative departments and to research possible new areas of training. He
said: ’There is a lack of apprenticeship skills for creatives. Some of
the basic skills slip through the net because they are all
over-ambitious when they start.’
David Kester, the chief executive officer of D&AD, said: ’We are lucky
to have Larry. This year he and Richard will make a strong team - they
are like-minded, energetic and committed.’
Barker added: ’Being president is something I will be proud to do. D&AD
has its ups and downs, but it’s the bible. It marks your history all the
way and it is always a solid and accurate reflection of the year’s
work.’
