Blog: On placement at Crown by Laura Mills

Laura Mills takes us through her experiences at university and how it compares to her current placement at Crown.

I chose to study event management at Bournemouth University for a number of reasons. The course is ranked as one of the best among the highest scoring universities in the National Student Survey, and after receiving an unconditional offer I decided it was the university for me.

The open day talks were very informative and they gave me a good overview of what the course would entail. I was motivated to learn everything the course had to offer and I was, and still am, incredibly keen to get out into the industry and start building my career.

During the first year I gained a basic understanding of the events industry and the different aspects involved. The second year was more practical – I was given the opportunity to respond to a real-life brief, which involved pitching, planning and producing an event.

It was the most valuable unit I had studied so far and formed my first practical assessment, however, without a doubt the most valuable component of the course has been the placement year.

I am currently at Crown, and the difference between studying the theory behind event management and actually working in the industry is quite simply worlds apart.

I have definitely been able to apply what I have learned at university to the work I have done at Crown so far. With the recent increase in tuition fees, many question the value of university, but I am glad I decided to go – the life knowledge and experience you gain is priceless.

The placement year is also invaluable. University is the right way to go for anyone who wants to gain practical access to the event industry, as well as learn the theory.

I haven’t got a specific area of events in mind that I want to work in when I graduate. I am yet to experience all of its areas in detail so I wouldn’t want to limit my options to a specific area so early in my career.

I am really enjoying my time at Crown, where I get to work across a diverse range of projects and I am involved with all aspects of project management. Perhaps ask me in a year’s time and I will be able to give you a better idea as to where I want to go with my career in the events industry.
