Blinkbox to launch ad-funded channel

Film clip and download website Blinkbox is developing an ad-funded TV service and has fully launched after attracting more than a million users since it went into beta testing mode in October.

The ad-supported TV channel will allow users to watch free, long-form TV shows.

Company founder Michael Cornish - a former Channel 4 exec and founder of Atom Films - has been negotiating with content owners since September and claims to have pulled together the web's largest legal film and TV collection.

The site boasts 10,000 scenes from 1,600 movies and TV shows including Scarface, Jaws and South Park. Content partners include Warner Brothers, Universal, Paramount, Aardman and Discovery, which have all signed up to a revenue-share model based around BlinkBox's download-to-own and download-to-rent services.

Advertisers that have signed up hoping to attract the site's 16 to 34-year-old user-base include Vodafone and Fox.

Sales for the site are being handled by BlinxBox's in-house ad team headed by Oliver Snoddy, as well as through digital agency Unanimis.

Cornish predicted that the site's strong social media element is the key to the site's success. A search marketing and viral campaign is also being launched to promote the site, which has relied on word of mouth.
